WHAT IS COMMUNITY-BASED TRAVEL?Community-based travel is travel where local people invite groups in to visit their communities. They will provide local guides, accommodation, cultural experiences and cater to the needs of visitors. The money that is earned from groups goes directly into the local community and often some of the proceeds will be set aside for projects which benefit the whole community.

WHY IS THIS TYPE OF TRAVEL IMPORTANT?A UN study showed that only 5% of the money spent on international travel will reach local communities - a very worrying stat indeed. Most of the money goes to airlines, big chain hotels, booking sites, and other operators. The effect of this is that local communities are left worse off and the natural environment is sometimes damaged. We know it doesn’t have to be like this, so through our community-based tourism, we can change it.
About Community Based Travel
ELA has worked with well over 100 rural communities in Southeast Asia. With our strong connections and trust within these communities, we are able to offer some truly unique travel opportunities. Where possible, excluding internal flights/hotels in major cities, we make sure that your trip falls under the Community-Based Travel category. We are able to organize group trips focused on your specific needs. Examples of trips can be trekking, women's focused, over 50's, wildlife and more. We will tailor each trip to make sure you get a unique experience. The length of the trip depends on you, but usually, they last for 5, 7 or 10 days.
